Students at the Rosh Pinah Jewish Theological Institute in Porto, Portugal

In the 1920’s Captain Arturo Carlos De Barros Basto returned to the Jewish faith having descended from Crypto Jews himself in Porto. He and some Merchants from Lithuania set out to revive the Community.

He went through the countryside searching for those many that were still hidden 500 years after the Inquisition and urged them to come to Porto and learn their faith. It was with great reluctance that they came out of hiding and Yeshivah Rosh Pinah was established from 1929-1935. The war then claimed much of Europe and they got scared and retreated back to their villages to hide once again. We are left with this register of their names and places of Birth.

En la década de 1920, el Capitán Arturo Carlos De Barros Basto regresó a la fe judía después de haber descendido de los Cripto-Judíos en Oporto. Él y algunos comerciantes de Lituania se propusieron revivir la Comunidad.

Recorrió los campo en busca de los muchos que aún estaban escondidos 500 años después de la Inquisición y les insistió a venir a Oporto y aprender su fe correctamente. Fue muy dificil sacarlos de donde habían estado escondidos pero fue posible establecer la Yeshivah Rosh Pinah que estuvo abierta entre 1929 y 1935. 

La guerra luego reclamó gran parte de Europa y los estudiantes se asustaron y regresaron a sus pueblos para esconderse una vez más. Nos queda este registro de sus nombres y lugares de nacimiento
